In this case, his idea was for a series of towers, anchored in [Nacine] to serve as a center of communication between the coast to the south, the Shallow Sea to the east, the Adrilankha River to the west, and Dzur Mountain to the north ... The Vallista, however, had barely begun their work when Dzur Mountain, some seventy or eighty miles north, had unexpectedly erupted, either because of the arcane activities of the Enchantress or in spite of them. The eruption had resulted in a remarkable flow of lava, which, in turn, resulted in the [Hightower Brook] becoming blocked to such an extent that it was no longer suitable for navigation The source of the Hightower Brook is almost certainly north of Nacine and somewhere in the Collier Hills; I guessed it starts near Dzur Mountain and drew it flowing from there to Nacine, and then south to the coast. Lostoar BrookThe distance from [the future home of Castle Black] to Dzur Mountain was not long--only some forty or forty-five miles ... the battlefield was some forty or forty-five miles south of [Dzur Mountain], fought in the most part along a small stream called Lostoar Brook, which ran generally east to west near to the southern border of the Southmoor County ... the stream was creeping generally southward [into the county of Iadim] Paarfi says it runs 40-45 miles south of Dzur Mountain, but then goes on to say that it had crept into the county to the south of Southmoor (Iadim). Steve's Map shows the southern border of Southmoor, and it's further than 45 miles from the center of Dzur Mountain, so I guessed this direction was from the southern slopes (that is, 25-30 miles from the peak, plus 40-45 more miles, or about 65 miles south of the peak). Since it runs east to west, it almost certainly runs into the Hightower Brook. I guessed it started in the hilly region to the east of Dzur Mountain. Six Horses[Tsira] lives not far from a village called Six Horses, on the northern slopes of South Mountain. take the road to the west [from Six Horses], in half a league, you will come to an elbow. Continue there as if there were no bend, and you will find a small path. When you reach a stream, follow it to the left for two leagues, and you will come to a cottage built into the side of the mountain [Tsira's home] ... they mounted their horses and, following the directions... found themselves, two hours later, looking at a small cottage next to a brook and surrounded by siju trees. I put Six Horses 25-30 miles north of the peak of South Mountain, then marked Tsira's house 1.5 miles west and 6 miles south of that point. Knuckle Mountainswe turn our attention to Northport, and then still further north, into the area known as the Fingers ... Among the Fingers, roughly halfway between Tree-By-The-Sea and the Narrows, is a principality with the fanciful name Mermaid Cove, the traditional home of the Tiassa Heir. It is a region protected from the worst of the storms by tall, grass-covered hills full of goats and squirrels, an area with thick forests, orchards of fruit trees ... Fresh water is found in abundance, both from springs and from the various streams flowing down from the Knuckle Mountains further north, and even from two respectable lakes, one called Rice Lake, named for that oddest of grains known as northrice that grows naturally around it (in addition to various sorts of mushroom), and further inland, Duckling Lake, which was near soybean and scorchroot fields. The chief town was known as Icolev, and was one of the larger cities ... in the sparsely settled north, boasting some six thousand residents, and also something of a trading center. I might be making too much of the name, but I guessed that the Knuckle Mountains (especially in relation to an area called the Fingers) resembled the knuckles of a human hand. I guessed they extend across all three fingers, but to make them more "knuckle like", I drew them with north/south valleys. home | contents | previous | next | index Questions? Comments?
